Year of Inscription: 2025
EBG Rating: 8.2/10
Choice/Quality of Drinks:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Basic beers including a Schwarzbier on tap, with a menu of mixers where beer is matched with likor of various description. Works with its medieval theme.
Style/Décor:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Basement pub in a low-key middle ages style. Chunky seats, exposed stonework, decorated with candles and simple, fairly tasteful decor. Building dates to the 1600s with some original features such as the medieval stone trough in the side room.
Atmosphere/Character:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
A characterful venue, as even at quieter times the epic faux-classical fantasy soundtrack is chuntering away in the background, while when busy, it is a true social destination rather than a restaurant.
Amenities/Events:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Food, snacks, board games, events, limited outdoor seating.
Value For Money:
❤️❤️❤️
Fairly typical pricing for central Regensburg.
Description:
‘The Patched-Up Drum’ is a middle-ages themed tavern, enough to make many people stop in their tracks. Yes, there are many of these around Europe that veer into being tacky and cringeworthy tourist traps, merely expensive restaurants with some tatty adornments.
Zur geflickten Trommel attempts to do things differently. For a start, it’s a pub, not a restaurant (despite what Google tells you). Yes, forget some over the top banqueting hall, this is not it. You can come here to drink and socialise contentedly without any pressure to dine. Enter through a small courtyard down some stairs to a basement pub.
The basement itself is located in Regensburg’s historic old town and dates from the 1600s. In the side room you can still see evidence in the shape of a stone water trough, below crown pattern glass windows. The building’s history explains why it feels such a natural fit.
Chunky tables, curved ceilings, stone and candlelit gloom await.
The busier times are of course in Autumn and Winter but counter-intuitively the heart of summer as people look to escape the searing heat in the cool shade of this cellar.
Some epic faux-classical music offers a kind of whimsical backdrop to this environment, where you can hang out and play board games, or order a quick flammkuchen (or a slow roast suckling pig), but ultimately hats off to them for attempting a well-worn concept and managing something with a social focus that’s reasonably tasteful too.
Staff are young and chatty, more than helpful, while the drinks selection is reasonable, with beers served in glazed earthenware mugs.
Now we’ve banged the drum for this place, what excuse do you have not to try it out?
