A broad range of Zipfer beers with some seasonal specials and a beer of the month (sometimes bottled) outside that range. Simple back bar and good wine options.

Situated in one of the oldest buildings in Salzburg, records dating back to the 1300s. The Zipfer operation has operated for only a fraction of that, but still for an impressive 120+ years. These days little imprint of the historic building remains on first glances but traces of historical layers can be glimpsed if you explore the premises. Two medium sized bar rooms and an ausschenk mean this is no cavernous beer hall but a decently sized pubs.

A clear sense of institution and a homely atmosphere with a sense of shelter from the outdoors is perhaps the strongest suit of this place.

Today’s operation is of a simple, straightforward Inn where drinking is not discouraged, nor is dining, the two sitting together absent of pressure. There is also an ausschenk, albeit fairly plain, opposite the taps for the most casual drinkers. Two rooms, including a slightly more formal room to the rear offer some variety.

It is all rather patrician but in a reassuring, rather than cold way. They tap several Zipfer beers, never the best brews, but the variety compensates somewhat, and the experience feels somewhat like being cradled in the bosom of Salzburg itself.
