It took a couple of tries but we are now sold on Uerige as a venue, especially the Schänke room with its stained glass, copper panels and brickwork, which during the day help create an atmosphere of almost church like dedication to Altbier.

The complex is sprawling however, and you may wish to explore, choosing your favourite spot, if it’s is available.

Their Altbier is decent and reliable here, though you’ll need to compare and contrast to some less fashionable and well-marked alternatives. They famously offer a stronger version ‘Sticke‘ which is tapped on special occasions. 

There is no question of the importance of this beer hall either, occupying a prominence comparable to the likes of Früh in Cologne, perhaps even more so in its location. 

It’s a common trip to fill up on Altbier then head next door to Et Kabuffke for the city’s deadly liquor Killepitsch.
