Choice/Quality of Drinks:
❤️❤️❤️
Drinks options are broad rather than deep, with some beers and schnapps typical of the region, though hardly specialist. Budvar on draft is a respite.

Style/Décor:
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A labour of love. Long, narrow kneipe with lounge space at the rear, bedecked in sporting and regional memorabilia, festooned on every available space.

Atmosphere/Character:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Casual and the very antithesis of pretentious, there is a sense of a local cult to it nevertheless. Service is welcoming in that straight-forward North German way, and although it is very bunker-like, people are social and you shouldn’t feel like an intruder.

Amenities/Events:
❤️❤️❤️
Snacks, TV, smoking permitted.

Value For Money:
❤️❤️❤️
Typical prices for the region.

Description:
A densely decorated traditional kneipe, here is where you will find a panorama of sporting memorabilia, an intimate, highly social, informal space and a typical friendly, but no-nonsense North German welcome.

It’s not going to be for everyone, although that’s hardly the point, as for those who like it (of which there are many), the Theatergaststätte proves among the best examples of its kind.

Friendly and lively during the day, turning bunker-like at night, there’s something unashamed about it that is downright admirable. I want a lager, a cigarette and a game of football on TV, and no-one’s going to make me feel guilty about it.

As a result, there’s a certain brashness, but this is offset by the clear effort, the labour of love and the fact this is so clearly intended to provide for people, rather than simply being a private clique. You’ll sense the distinction, even if it isn’t your cup of tea.

Drinks are broad rather than deep, with some beers and schnapps typical of the region, though hardly specialist.

There’s an inescapable feeling if we lived in the city we’d be here a lot.
