Superb eye-catching rustic market town tavern with preserved stoves and cupboards, tiled floors and maze of side rooms. Bar area lit with a fireplace and leather seating. A true throwback.

Character
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A truly special atmosphere in all rooms except perhaps for the more familiar barn-style conversion/extension at the back. The bar area has a cast of locals and roaring fire, the side rooms are dimly lit and clandestine, perfect for winter visits especially.

Value For Money❤️❤️❤️
Decent for the area but not the bargain value they used to offer.
DescriptionBittersweet that this pub is owned by Sam Smiths, although the benefit is the pub remains in superb preserved condition, worn and characterful, museum-like but still relevant with the cast of regulars in the main room. and warren of rustic side-rooms that will transport you to centuries past.

Known as ‘Nellies’ locally after the landlord that used to run the place up until the mid-1970s. The building itself, a former coaching inn dates back to the mid 1600s.

Don’t miss the candelit quiz nights.

A true gem worth seeking out even from far away. (added February 2022)
