| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️ So far a relatively mainstream selection available covering all bases perfunctorily. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Well, it’s a train carriage with a bar fitted into it. 1990s spec upholstery with a ‘pseud’s corner’ to the end of the trail with large seats and lamplight. Fun novelties such as the emergency brake reconfigured to be a water tap. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ The novelty value is high of course, but to find the bar busy with a wide range of people and a buzzing atmosphere is really special, making it feel like some accident or delay has been turned into a party, oddly World War style. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️ Summer BBQs are promised, outdoor seating in warmer weather, books, board games. |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️ Pretty standard for the area. |
| Description | One-man team Janne Hiltunen, whose professed approach to life is to meet challenges head on, bit off a little more than he could chew in efforts to build a brewpub in the warehouses by Turku train station. The Ukraine war put a stay on the idea due to the rise in material costs and logistics disrupting his business model. As it so happens, he already had a backup plan in the guise of a 1990s train carriage, which saw service during the 1990s between Helsinki and St Petersburg. The blue and salmon pink decoration inside will make those who made the journey nostalgic for the area. Tåget now joins the list of venues repurposed from former use in Turku. It is, for reasons both accidental and purposeful, a great experience. This side of the tracks in Turku is awaiting the usual redevelopment and gentrification, so for now, the cast of patrons is an interesting mix from punk/bohemian dropouts to middle aged families, with plenty in between. The atmosphere in the carriage therefore feels like a journey, if rather over time than space. Kick back and have a game of chess or head over to the “pretentious” seats at the back which Janne has set up for a slightly different vibe. Once full up, the intimacy is added to by the sense of transgression – should this be happening in a train carriage? There is a faintly end-of-days atmosphere as though we are hiding from zombies or air strikes, which on top of the superficial novelty factor makes this bar an extremely distinctive experience – not only for Finland, which is short on such places, but Europe in general. |
