| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 5 keg lines from 9 White Deer brewery and visibly no Guinness, Murphy’s or Beamish. A compact selection of wines and gins advertised. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ A former working class boozer turned into a plush, but still distinctly pubby one-room bar. Cushioned bench seating around the three walls with curved bar to the right of the entrance with interesting panelling and effect. Stools at the bar. Bell for entry. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ A close, personal touch here, with greeting on entry and a clandestine feel from that gatekeeping. Once inside, the warmth and twinkle of lights make it cosy and atmospheric, with a friendly, unthreatening feel that will appeal to a broader audience than the typical pub men. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Books, snacks, live music, community and cultural events. Private hire available on closed dates. |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️❤️ Typical city centre prices without standing out either way. |
| Description | Formerly Pat Buckley’s place, known locally ‘Ms. Pat’s’, a fairly dramatic change has taken place at this venue, changing it from a rough and ready working class pub to a bar still with a personal feel, but adding a distinctly feminine touch. There’s no doubt this has alienated many of its former patrons, and we aren’t here to discuss which one was better or worse, but to tell you about the merits of the current operation known as Maureen’s. With a bell for entry, this is a place that wants to keep big groups and loud drunks out. As you enter, you’re in an old living room style pub lovingly refit with its cushioned bench seats around the walls and a small curved bar to the right. Service is careful, welcoming and personal, all about providing an intimate, special feel. Maureen’s doesn’t hold back in its willingness to divert from the norm, as you’ll find no Guinness, Murphy’s or Beamish here. Instead, the beers of 9 White Deer, a local brewery are available on tap, alongside wines and gins offered. Among the comfortable seating, twinkle of fairy lights and murmur of conversation, this is a truly atmospheric place and a little hideaway for anyone who wants to lower the tempo and volume a tad. They’ve executed it so well it really deserves to be mentioned alongside Cork’s best. (Added February 2025) |
