Description:
Beneath the millions of videos and how-to blogs on the excesses and gaudy hedonism of the Reeperbahn, few of these publicity hounds mention (because they aren’t interested) that only a few streets off it can be found a vibrant network of low-key working class pubs visited by locals.

Holsten-Schwemme is perhaps an ur-typical example of such a corner pub. Arch-traditional with the predictable seafaring theme and during the day as local as it comes.

In St Pauli that doesn’t mean unfriendly. Some servers can be wary of an unfamiliar face and size you up out of experience, but these are also direct and straight dealing people who you can break the ice with quickly.

You’d barely believe the Reeperbahn was merely at the end of the street as you enjoy ostensibly cosy, homely and traditional pub environment typical of North German and Baltic ports. As per usual, arrive expecting some smoking going on, but this is a reasonably spacious and better ventilated place than some.

Claiming to be established in 1895, this is as much a fixture of the district as any other pub you could name, including some far more famous.

With a pool table, jukebox, darts, games machines and TV showing live matches, it manages all those without becoming too trashy.

Owning a late license, you may find the place transformed depending what time of day you visit.

It’s a well equipped likeable boozer that absolutely isn’t for everyone but isn’t trying to be. A bit like St Pauli in general.
