| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️ On the budget end of things, simple selection of basic wares covering most bases. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ A basement bar set just off the street, with an interior of lounge simplicity, comfortable but certainly well-worn. A bar room and side lounge with pool room to the rear. In the lounge, net curtains, red upholstery and lamp light give it a certain stuck-in-time look. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ One of the bars that lives up to the atmospheric venues of Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki’s films. A simple living room, but one where conversation, chat and fun is in bountiful supply. A young-ish audience although not exclusively. There’s a certain comfort, relaxation and golden glow that seems to pin you in your seat. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️ Pool, snacks, books, board games, instruments. |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️❤️ Reasonable prices in context of Helsinki centre. |
| Description | Director Aki Kaurismaki brought Helsinki’s nightlife to the world stage, a panoply of out-of-time retro bars and peculiar characters that the city had produced, an enigmatic yet vivid world behind the veneer of society. Several such bars remain and Harry’s is arguably one of them. Being a short walk from the central station makes this an achievable target for anyone seeking the experience, but we recommend doing so after dusk falls, when the atmosphere takes on a different colour. Set in a half-step basement, there is already a feel of clandestine activity as you set foot in the bar. A comfortable lounge area awaits with red upholstery, lamp light and net curtains offering a kind of caught-in-time atmosphere. As the evening progresses, with 2am closing, this kind of hangout is where to find the true social activity in the city, not so much the upright beer destinations. Drinks are cheap and cheerful, (minus the cheap – it’s Helsinki) and merely provide the lubrication for the socialising. Charming and loveable, qualities wider sections of Finnish society would do well to hold in higher esteem. |
