| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Greene King stable beers complimented by guest ales, some of which are from regional independent brewers. A solid back bar of alternatives. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ L-shaped pub in 17th century building that has served as a pub since Victorian times. With bar at the entrance and backroom with further seating and billiards table. Traditional furniture with personalised decorations and events posters. The rear hosted a small microbrewery in the 1970s and 1980s no longer in operation. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ A genuinely characterful pub with a genteel nature but an assertive identity, not least due to the operation running it. A far cry from the preconceptions of a Greene King pub. Busy on event nights with tables reserved for quiz teams worth watching out for. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Quiz, bar billiards, snacks, limited outdoor seating, newspapers, live music |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️❤️ Reasonable value considering the brewery tie. |
| Description | Despite being a tied pub, you will find plenty of personality about Golden Star. The Greene King awning out front is normally a prompt for shoulders to slump, but don’t be deterred. Inside you’ll find an L-shaped compact pub with traditional fixtures and fittings, comfortable furniture and a personalised interior, with plenty of signs of community involvement. Regular events such as pub quiz, live music, billiards league draws in a loyal following, and it’s a friendly crowd too – typical for Norwich but nevertheless notable. The Greene King involvement slightly hampers the drinks selection and pricing for obvious reasons, but they do select guest ales, some of which are from regional independent brewers. We can firmly recommend a visit. (Added August 2024) |
