Description:
Opening in 1984, Freudenpark has ascended to cult status in the subsequent decades.
Set out in the Nordstadt, this venue is as close to the airport as it is to the city centre. Without many other options nearby, visiting here is a bit of a singular experience. However, it’s easy to reach, a simple 10 minute bus ride.
The suburban location means more space, something Freudenpark uses to great effect. Large signage and an elaborate garden out front with pétanque court, stage, water features and barbecue is a flavour of what’s to come.
Inside, you’ll find a vast space, high ceiling and wood fittings. Impressive, distinctive and eye-catching, rarely found in Germany. Tastefully curated with a mixture of retro artwork and brand signs, and as you survey the scene, you’re still wondering what exactly is this. A late bar, a local pub, a cocktail lounge, a road house? The answer is, a little bit of all of that. One thing this is not, is a Gaststatte, or any kind of food-led Wirtshaus. This is where to go for an evening drink.
The service at the bar has that sort of cocktail bar pretense, with the staff very much masters of the back bar, however, the approach and atmosphere is more casual still. Behind the bar they offer a few good beers as well as the wide selection of drinks. Huppendorfer Vollbier tastes as good on tap here as virtually anywhere.
With darts and table football, this is an impressively versatile venue that due to its location pulls in a diverse audience, all without losing any identity or distinctive touches. It is, in essence, a superb creation. Forget how far out it looks on a map – hop on a bus and go to Nuremberg’s finest bar.
