| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ A decent range of cask ales and well stocked back bar. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Housed in an insurance building dating from 1901, repurposed to become Cain Brewery’s flagship pub, the grand exterior hints at the opulence to be found inside, although this won’t greet you straight away in the bar room other than an impressive cabinet by the entrance. Instead, walk across the bar to the tiled room, where a staggeringly beautiful and intricate arched, tiled room with a high ceiling greets you. The theme is more muted in the loungier backrooms but consistent overall with the ensemble. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Some intrinsic character by virtue of the unusually lavish surroundings, but this is a pub with a varied layout and different corners with their own feel and atmosphere. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️ Meals, TV, snacks |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️❤️ Typical city centre prices. |
| Description | Even if you haven’t time for a drink, the elaborate tiling at Doctor Duncan’s is worth popping your head through the door to look at, one of Liverpool’s architectural gems, even in a city with more than a few. Varied rooms with a more workaday hustle at the bar and loungier back room space provide a degree of versatility, but the high ceilings and sense of institution put this firmly in the bracket of ‘city tavern’. Drink options are decent with a well stocked back bar and range of cask and keg which include independent brewers. A heritage venue with some relevance, not without flaws but with true quality as well. It should be on your to-do list for Liverpool. (Added July 2024) |
