Description:
Wismar’s late bar is open 7 days a week but only from 8pm. Indeed we barely had time from opening to explore the bar, knock back a drink and get the train. Nevertheless, with years under our belt sussing out places, we still managed to get a good flavour of the place.
Colourful frontage on Lubsche street gives Schlauch a certain cheekiness as well as prominence. It’s a shame it doesn’t open a little earlier in the day, but it does build up a certain excitement as opening time approaches.
Inside you’ll find a fairly narrow bar with high ceiling, beams and space which has been highly personalised, from posters, guitars, lamplight and old memories. This becomes especially effective as day turns to night.
Towards the back you’ll find a leafy courtyard with further space to associate.
Schlauch has a broad menu with drinks to satisfy most tastes, albeit beer is the fairly typical North German selection with the addition of Guinness.
One downside to report unfortunately is the acceptance of table reservations on weekends adding an informality and barrier that late bars simply shouldn’t have, unfortunately a cultural problem for Germany as a whole suffers from.
There are reviews indicating it is an Irish pub. That is a little overstated. There are some Irish nik-naks but they don’t dominate to the point you’d ever call this a theme pub. It would be a bad idea to move in that direction anyway.
Be aware smoking is permitted and they take payment in cash only (also typical for the area).
