Quality of Drinks
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Gins are the major standout with a notable selection of over 150 bottles, while beers are a little more towards the familiar end. Not alone in claiming the best pint of stout in Cork.
Style/
Décor
❤️❤️❤️❤️
A small pub room with rear space by a fireplace. Traditionally decorated and furnished with memorabilia from the pubs former multi-use as stonemasons and medics. Covered outdoor area which can be used for events, and indoor stage and performance area with its own bar (apparently rarely used).
Atmosphere/
Character
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Enjoyable patter even at quiet times. This is an operation that pulls in a good range of people besides the usual suspects, reaching its zenith around curtain call when events are on.
Amenities/
Events
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Live music, comedy acts, fireplace, outdoor seating
Value For Money❤️❤️❤️
Reasonable, on average for the city centre and nearby businesses.
DescriptionLive music and frequent comedy acts keep a conveyor belt of punters coming through the door to Coughlan’s stage area which becomes the ‘Comedy Cavern’ several nights a week. A democratic range from local acts and open mic to individuals you’ll have heard about or seen in national productions. Of course, none of that means the slightest thing to our guide if the pub was not good!

Instead, there’s a pleasing immediacy to surroundings as you enter from its black and gold frontage. Seating in the main room feels pretty close to the bar, just a holler away from getting attention of the staff. This gives it an informality that encourages craic and cross-chat.

The pub room is decorated traditionally with the usual framed mirrors and heritage on the walls, and fireplace to the rear of the room. Some of the memorabilia harks back to the owners days as stone masons and medical practitioners.

Coughlan’s has also joined the trend of covered outdoor areas which can be seen out the back.

Drinks-wise, gins are the major standout with a selection of over 150 bottles, while beers are a little more towards the familiar end. Not alone in claiming the best pint of stout in Cork. Be the judge of that yourself.

There’s plenty of reason to drop by at any time of day or evening, but be warned the space inside fills up towards curtain call during events. (Added February 2025)
