Description:
Johannisplatz’s best late bar, the eponymous bar is known in Munich as a ‘boazn’, generally speaking casual little pubs for socialising. That said, Johannis isn’t just a boozer, they offer food, particularly Flammkuchen.
You’ll find a twee, country leaning interior with an iconic image of the Matterhorn. Furniture has a classical, rickety look. Gutmann and Augustiner beer flows and you’ll find anyone here from crust punks to bourgeois couples.
The owner Olaf Schmidt has become a legend in his own lifetime since taking up the role in 1991, seen by his mock-up as King Ludwig behind the bar. However, memories of the place linger back to 1925, and the years of time well spent in here are palpable. Clearly one of the best bars of its style in the city.
