Location: Kleine Hohe Str. 15, 23966 Wismar
Venue Type: Brewery / Pub Restaurant / Traditional
Year of Inscription: 2025
EBG Rating: 7.5/10
Choice/Quality of Drinks:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Several beers on tap including specials in bottle you can purchase to take away. Star of the show is the historical style Mumme, a dark, rich and well hopped but almost stout-like smooth, thick brew which is worth visiting the venue for alone.
Style/Décor:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Historic premises with a Medieval warehouse feel, with the early 00s town brewpub style applied to it. Pretty tasteful in this case letting the original features and space speak for itself. As with most of these brewpubs they could do more to design a casual drinking space around the bar, but that is a wider issue not specific to this.
Atmosphere/Character:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Characterful premises and tasteful interior design with the central institution atmosphere you get from main town brewpubs. Friendly service but obviously can be touristy, the worst times being the arrival of hordes of cruise shippers and coach trippers.
Amenities/Events:
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Food, snacks, outdoor seating, takeaway, shop, event space, occasional live music.
Value For Money:
❤️❤️❤️
Typical city centre/brewpub prices
Description:
An alarmingly low review score is always reason to pause and consider, as we also did, before visiting this dockside brewpub.
As their website sets out, brewing is Wismar was previously a much bigger deal, both for the domestic and foreign audience, although much of it brewed on a small scale by home-brewers. The building this operation is based in was also a brewery as far back as 1452, under the name ‘Hinricus Noyte’s Brewery #1’.
These days, the low review scores must be on account of inundations of Baltic sea tourists arriving on cruise ships, perhaps coach trips also, because honestly, on our visit there was really nothing to provoke any wild negative reactions.
The brewery has a beautiful frontage on the cobbled lane by the old dock, and inside you’ll find a venue in traditional style but with an open plan warehouse type feel to it.
Service was friendly, attentive and the beers interesting too. Perhaps the main event is Mumme, a dark beer, well-hopped, smooth and rich. This style cannot be found everywhere, in fact that something of an understatement. We’d literally never seen it on sale anywhere before.
The environment is pleasant, perhaps a little outdated but of a kind that will be familiar to anyone who travels around Germany, and fairly well-financed and well-maintained. There was no apparent reason for the low scores we read, and so we can actually actively recommend visiting for a beer.
