A micro-nation with a multi-lingual population, most residents start with fluency in 4 languages - Luxembourgish, French, German and English.
70% of residents of the capital, Luxembourg City are foreign nationals, so this is a country heavily propped up by the nations around it - and some surprising ones. 20% of Luxembourg residents also speak Portuguese.
A wealthy nation with the 2nd highest GDP per capita in Europe.
What these means for its bar scene is two competing forces - the first ethnic flavour, the second a Mitteleuropa mélange where bars are crushed into blandness through the social climbing/high society elements and lack of other distinctive reference points.
That said, the capital is still a capital, so whether it's Upper or Lower Town, you'll find a wide range of options of different varieties, if not much depth behind them. In summertime the Grund area is particularly lively, but some cosy and distinctive cafés and bars keep things moving in winter.
Despite not being bar related, it is essential to point out just how dramatic and awe-inspiring the geography and topography of Luxembourg City is, matching anywhere in Europe.
In reality, it's a country you'll pay a visit for a few days rather than spend weeks exploring, but it shouldn't be overlooked, as it so often is.

Nightlife Rating: ❤️❤️❤️
A small capital city with a long history but a fast expanding population, set across a large gorge. This makes the various districts highly distinctive and - unless you're gazing across the sweeping vistas - not even feeling like part of the same whole.
A trip between the Upper and Lower Town, or to the districts of Gare, Bonnevoie, Limpertsberg and Kirchberg are not small undertakings, but normally require planning and the assistance of the - free! - public transport.
The Upper Town, the main city centre is compact and while not without sights, relatively uneventful, and the same goes for its handful of nightlife options which do at least cover a few bases.
This is added to substantially by the Lower Town where a lot of bars, clubs and restaurants are located. Outside of Spring and Summer these still may not reach the energy required.
If you're looking for specialist beers or wines, these are catered for, likewise some distinctive one-off venues like Artistes or institutions like Interview. Spread thinly but broadly, with some forward planning you can enjoy a good day or evening out.
Be warned that many venues will not open earlier in the week or until 5pm onwards.
