| Description | When you’re far away from home in an exotic land such as Bosnia, you don’t hanker after sterile bars pumping out Eurodance, stuffed with plastic and metallic furniture and similarly plastic patrons. Unfortunately the pub scene in Sarajevo is has plenty of such options as a young crowd grasp unsuccessfully at a vague simulacra of what they believe Westerners are doing. Time then, to rush headlong into the historical character of Sarajevo, or seek out anything remotely alternative. Such a place exists, and boy, what a place it is. Zlatna Ribica (Gold Fish) is a place of exotic eccentricity, stuffed with antiques and features that could keep your eyes occupied for hours. The sheer volume of it exceeds even the bar’s internal surroundings and even spills out onto the street, with one of their eccentric gadgets and bits of furniture occupying the street front. Yes, you will find some gold fish, bowls stacked over piles of books, ornate antique lampshades and waxed sideboards and rails studded with crenulations and detailing. The bar may be ornamental but it is also extremely quirky, with objects positioned where they shouldn’t be, and the oddest objects rearing their heads. Don’t be alarmed by the portable black and white TV in the toilets resting on a toilet roll showing lions mating in the Savannah. You can recline in a truly unusual and richly atmospheric pub, which feels like being in a mad professor’s study, sipping cocktails or local beers, knowing you’re in one of the best pubs in the world. |
