| Description | Vzorkovna is an alternative hideout for when the smokey cream, brown and greens of traditional Czech pivnices get a bit samey. It’s an interesting literally bohemian bunker of different rooms and moods, somewhere between a bar and a club. First things first: A strange payment system that may initially send off the wrong signals. You rent a fob which is then used inside to pay for beer. You’ll note the server becoming irate as for the zillionth time they ask a clueless newcomer to blam their fob against the (not very well signposted) counting machine at the bar. After your time in the bunker you emerge at the top to settle up your account with the doorman. Sounds dodgy as anything, but I can confirm no swindling or funny business goes on, and the guy at the top is reasonably easy going depending on the time of night. Once you’re over that initially strange faff you can concentrate on drinking and having a good time. The bars are stocked with 6 or 7 interesting Czech beers on tap. Yes, bars plural, this venue holds quite a web of different rooms, and it’s worth having a good walk around to explore where you’d prefer to hang out. One room looks like the galley of a ship, another is a very compact little music venue, there are maze like corridors, stairs up to balconies and down into basements, and every now and then a dog passes doing laps of the place. It’s a nice reminder that Prague, just like Budapest and Krakow does have a good underground scene, it’s just so buried under high quality regular pubs that you occasionally have to remind yourself to partake in it. It’s quite obviously a bit of a hipster/alt-crowd hangout for twenty somethings, but there’s enough space to choose how you want to hang out, whether that’s finding a snug corner, or reclining with some of the dropouts, or enjoying the live music. There’s plenty to do, and despite the fact beer is served in bloody jam jars, even that cannot prevent this strong recommendation. |
