Absolute bargain basement fodder – Suceava lager and its equivalents, huge bottles of low grade liquor.

Covered seating outside with a bunker like interior. One small room with wood panels surrounded by radiators keeping everything warm. Bar to the left with a plastic screen.

An absolute love-or-hate venue. Utterly absent of any form of pretension or artifice, the charm here is in its steadfast refusal to change with the times, and thus offers a window into a previous time and culture in the country. Popular with youngsters who occupy the terrace areas, as well as the grizzled regulars who are camped inside. Everything from the service, the clientele and the surroundings is local culture in situ. We can’t promise you’ll enjoy it, only that it is truthful, authentic and you can learn more about Romania in 5 minutes here than in a whole weekend at some of the central theme bars.

By far the cheapest bar in the city, around half the price of even the cheapest mainstream alternatives (which are certainly not twice as good)
DescriptionNothing less than a cult classic, Vipard is popular not for its cutting edge product or see and be seen crowd, but because of its commitment to being the antithesis of modern movements.

This is surely a love-hate format. Not everyone is going to enjoy diving into a local only bunker, approaching a bar with a plastic screen as grizzled patrons watch on. However, there is much fun to be had, and you can learn more about Romania spending 5 minutes in this bar than you can at the well-financed ventures further into the city centre.

With prices pitched at not only dirt cheap but easily half the prices of even the nearest competitors, Vipard ensures the holy union of all down and dirty boozers – students and youngsters out to get wasted on a budget, and grizzled regulars who add their usual eccentric and unpredictable flavour.

This is of course an intimidating environment initially for a newcomer, particularly any shrinking violet, but if I were to tell you the owner shook my hand as I left, you can build a picture of its underlying honesty, authenticity and gentility.

Worthy of serious consideration for anyone who is more interested in experiencing local life and culture in situ above hopping from one empty sterile bar to another ticking off beers. And, if you don’t believe us, the reviews online should speak for themselves. Who knows how much longer this bar will be around?
