| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 7/8 wines by the glass, plus good beer from Malesov and the basic lager from Platan. A typical central European back bar. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️ Basement venue that is caught somewhere between its humble origins as a working class Vinarna and a cleaner look with art on the walls. It is neither unpleasant, nor is it bland, but the space itself could be put to more distinctive use. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Very pleasant, homely and cosy venue with friendly service and nice surroundings, a venue with a better balance of men/women than you often find in Czech pubs too. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️ Food, snacks |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Entirely fair value given the location and for the product. |
| Description | Among Prague’s cast of slowly vanishing working class Vinárnas, a culture alien to Northern Europe where wine is synonymous with social climbing and status. Things are changing in central Europe too, and this is also wiping out the family-run, basic and simple wine bar as we know it. Vinohrady is a fashionable place and knowledgeable enough to have a nostalgia for certain thing. Whether by performance, novelty, chance, or a combination of those and other things, U Vavru survives and thrives with a canny combination of offerings that draw in a typical Vinohrady audience, at a fair price. A basement venue with simple and quite familiar surroundings, offering half a dozen wines by the glass and a good lager from Malesov, in a rather pubby environment. Here, cooked meals rather emphasis the nature of it as a pub and social meeting spot rather than any kind of pretentious wine bar. Please do your best to support these business so we can maintain the diversity of bars and respect a distinctive culture that deserves to see the next generation. (Added October 2024) |
