DescriptionAny serious beer drinker’s first trip to Prague will almost certainly involve a pub crawl of the old town area, where the majority of the best venues are traditional Czech beer halls selling the holy grail: unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell poured direct from the tank, with a formidable wall of head occupying a third of the glass, obstructing your path to the beautiful beer below but keeping the beer fresh and adding aroma and texture.

U Vejvodu has a lot of the characteristics that captured my imagination on my first visit.

In addition to what seems to be a nicely sized pub area in the front room, and a number of alcoves to sit and plot over a pint, venture even further down the stairs to discover an enormous – cavernous even – historical cellar, with a giant curved roof and a skylight. When you’ve stood outside the place and inspected the tiny pub entrance, and the oblique surrounding buildings it appears at first impossible to conceive such a space would be downstairs.

It’s also a restaurant and there is a dining area, but this place at least couldn’t be clearer of its core purpose – it’s an enormous beer hall.

Be Warned: If you decide to eat this pub is notorious for sharp practise such as ‘couvert charges’, with bread and condiments added to your bill even if you ask for it without, and attempts by staff to cleave tips which is not practise in Prague.

We recommend sticking to beer, which is very reasonably priced for the city centre, and you won’t be expected to tip for a round or two.

The raw materials of this pub speak for themselves. If you like your impressive beer hall surroundings, a great pub atmosphere and quality Czech lager, there’s a very good chance you’ll enjoy yourself at U Vejvodu.

It’s a classic Prague beer hall.
