| Description | The old town in Prague may be saturated with tourists, but regardless of that, certain traditions remain. The city beer hall or Pivnice is an institution that has survived for generations, centuries even, and U Medvidku is another venue that delivers on that promised format, adding a little something extra in the process. Yes, there’s cream walls, curved ceilings, wooden bench seatings and that sense of institutionalised grandeur – even in the mere size of the building itself. It’s vast and there is plenty to walk around and explore. If you’re seeking out that Prague pub atmosphere, you won’t go far wrong coming here. The tap beer in Medvidku, surprisingly, is a Budvar rather than Pilsner Urquell, a reasonably rare sight around the city. It’s pristine, as you’d expect, but look further around the place, as there’s an on-site brewery making their own creations. There’s a pub within a pub serving their own brewed beer Old Gott, a special beer (similar to a German bock) of hefty strength but masses of flavour. Depending on the season they will usually be brewing one or two others, so don’t miss the chance to try a glass of something else as well as the Budvar. Take your seat in the place that most fits your needs, be that a quick dive in through the front for a pint, or a meal in the pivnice or a secret glass of the good stuff upstairs in the ante room. There’s plenty going on, you can even stay over if you have the money. U Medvidku has okay reviews, partly on account of the tourist churn, and some ridiculous expectations of the many absolute dweebs that come to Prague but it remains recommended from the beer drinking and pub going fraternity and for good reason. |
