DescriptionWe have ummed and aahed about including Fleku for a long time.

A famous historic beer hall, it has been a curate’s egg of a venue as long as we’ve known it. As a venue and an experience, visit if you plan ahead and know the operation’s tricks.

The historic premises is truly spectacular even at the entrance, with 8 rooms decked out in dark wood, stained glass with frescoes on the wall, similar to a Bamberg style beer hall. They brew here and offer tours of their brewing operations. Their dark lager is undoubtedly one of the best in the country (or even best in the world).

Since Covid they began doing a light lager, which was slightly disappointing given the rare, uncompromising quality of offering only one dark beer.

Now time for the warnings: watch out for the raft of hidden extras they will add to your bill if you eat, and refuse the offer of Becherovka shots if you don’t want an extra £5 to magically appear on your bill.

Further marks down for the staff who patrol the place more like bouncers than servers, giving the feel of attending a beer hall in a police state, not quite allowing you to fully relax.

Visit on a Monday out of season (early March or something) earlier in the day and it can be quite a positive experience. The large tables fill up and the joy of the people overtakes the slightly tense atmosphere created by the servers.

The highs are so high it is well worth trying, but you have been warned about the rest, so don’t complaint to us if it goes wrong.
