Description:
Antwerp’s stock and trade is the brown café. To be fair to these, they are not monotonous and you’ll find all kinds of atmosphere in them these days – some are young, noisy and counter cultural as well as the patrician middle-aged examples. However, there are few if any bars like Tram 3, situated on the first floor of a mansion house, with a roof terrace that – just about – gives you views of the cathedral spire.
In the bar room itself a vast ceiling with candelabra, and even more eye-catchingly grand, elaborate fireplace draws the eye. It is decorated in a colourful, arty and modern style, which is an unusual but fairly effective combination.
Prices are relatively high here, while staff can be rushed off their feet even at times that don’t look to be that busy. There is a certain sense of church that perhaps detracts overall, but nowhere near enough to stop this being a welcome change of speed and scenery and a curiosity all of itself worth discovering.
