Quality of Drinks
Large selection of cask ales. OK back bar. Poor keg range that needs updating.
Genteel alehouse surroundings with tall ceiling and a curved wall around which bench seats and stools are placed. A hint of a café bar to it, A backroom with more pub appeal, red walls, pool table and breweriana recovered and placed on the walls.
Dominated by older folk during the day, it did seem bordering on an elderly waiting lounge, however comes alive during evenings and on Match Days.
Outdoor seating, games, books, snacks
Value For Money
OK for the area, slightly more expensive.
No great anticipation arises as you approach the Smithfield with its generic grey-wash exterior, however on entry the place has an immediate draw with its simple farmhouse-y appearance with high ceilings and stripped back rustic décor. A rounded seating area envelopes the bar, with a backroom that acts somewhat as overspill but is more pubby and less café like than the bar. The regular clientele are late middle aged and as such, the place lacks a certain verve outside of evenings and match days where it comes alive. Cask ale options are great but there is room for improvement on keg and the back bar. Overall though, the appeal is sufficient to merit an inclusion.
