Choice/
Quality of Drinks
⭐⭐⭐⭐
A relevant up to date selection of craft cask and keg ales covering local to international, plenty of choices. Alternatives are reasonably good too if not the focus.
Style/
Décor
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Plush, lavish Victorian interior with thick curtains, detailed ceilings and row of lamps across the bar. Plenty of varnished wood and darkly lit areas, with a lounge to the left of the entrance, bar room to the right. Signage out front a little tired and hardly representative of the lovely sight that greets you upon entering.
Atmosphere/
Character
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Atmospheric day or night, with exterior concerns appearing to melt away once you enter this beautiful time warp. Cast of regulars and broad clientele too which really helps give it a sense of significance.
Amenities/
Events
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Meals, snacks, TV, occasional live events
Value For Money⭐⭐⭐
Standard for the high quality produce available, certainly not cheap but not unfair.
DescriptionAlthough the building is a smart, impressive one, some tired signage may not give off immediate vibes as to the lovely Victorian pub inside. This plush drinking hole in a building dated to 1885 is a bit of a bunker with thick curtains and frosted glass keeping the Sunderland out and the warmth and cosiness in. Fine detail to the interior with décor sympathetic to its turn of the 20th century appearance. A great range of relevant cask and keg ales gives young and old reason to visit which helps give it a sense of significance and social value. Occasional live events and the odd podcast etc are hosted here too. A must visit while in Sunderland. (Added March 2023)
