Quality of Drinks
❤️❤️❤️❤️
A stronger than average beer selection for an institution central pub is due to an absence of beer tie, with a quite impressive selection of cask ales from independent smaller Scottish breweries and even some interesting keg too. A well-stocked back bar for alternatives with the predictable whisky focus.
Style/
Décor
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A survivor from the golden age of Scottish pub building, a corner building with revolving doors which leads to an opened out pub space (formerly partitioned, sadly removed), with impressive detailed sealing and grand bar.
Atmosphere/
Character
❤️❤️❤️
A busy, bustling bar with transient trade. Perhaps a little towny at times, particularly on matchdays, although this comes with the territory. There is a feeling the reformed open plan nature of the layout does not help the space fulfil its potential, but it is nevertheless an enjoyable place to be.
Amenities/
Events
❤️❤️❤️
Food, snacks, TV, occasional live events during Fringe festival
Value For Money❤️❤️
A central venue with prices to match.
DescriptionA survivor from the golden age of Scottish pub building and situated yards from some of Edinburgh grandest buildings, it is no surprise to find the pub has tried to keep up appearances with a magnificently lavish interior, the standout perhaps being its Jacobean style ceiling, but the revolving doors on entrance and grand bar are similarly notable.

A strong beer selection will always make this a go-to for many, including even an up to date keg selection of modern beers, along with many cask ales from smaller independent brewers.

Trade is brisk and the atmosphere can get lively, but there is a slight feeling the opened out cavernous nature of it moves the ambience further towards a Wetherspoons than would be ideal. Nevertheless, there remains plenty to enjoy.
