Quality of Drinks
An outstanding selection of cask beers with some decent keg options as well by comparison with other options in the city. A strong suit.
2 room tavern with a bar area and lounge, both of which have a certain appeal. The lounge is especially characterful with its archway and recovered brewery signage, with simple furniture.
Buzzy and local in the bar room, while in the lounge, surroundings that put you immediately at ease.
Hotel with rooms, pub rabbit, cold food available, books, board games, dart board, fireplace.
Value For Money
OK for the area.
A fantastic pub and candidate for one of the better traditional taverns in England. The two room setup provides both social informality and comfort depending on your mood. There is a nice mixture of locals and passing trade, partly on account of the proximity to the train station but also its pull as a reputed beer house, demonstrated by its CAMRA awards, not to mention new keg lines of craft beers. Service is friendly and the overall impression is extremely good. Worth going to Derby for on its own, which is even factoring in Derby’s general lack of appeal is quite the statement.
