While fourth grade pubs (Ctyrky) are charming social documents, even those of us who are their ardent supporters must concede that many don’t succeed in driving in a particularly varied audience. This can sometimes limit the ratings we give to a 7.4/7.5 region. It is part of the lifeblood of a pub to have the next generation present, a sense of continuity and renewal, as well as vibrancy. Some pubs have achieved that, some haven’t.

On our visit to this Dejvice boozer, initially it looked like the typical cast you’d find in such a place, but within 10 minutes of entering, a large group of youngsters turned up and occupied one of the tables in the room. It didn’t appear to be a random selection either, but felt like a neighbourhood crowd who have been here more than a few times.

Like some of the greats of the genre, this pub is cheap and cheap prices attract students and those of a similar age. Offering Staropramen and Svijany beers at prices which at the time of writing are well below average and some of the cheapest in the city.

As for the pub, from the outside you pick up on ‘proper boozer’ vibes from its green shop front, and nik-naks of a sort that have long fallen out of fashion in central Prague which now simply chases after anything that looks new. A model tall ship in quite unusual for a pub window even around the country though. Inside, the sailing theme continues across the walls. There’s a bar directly by the entrance, a little bit like Na Trzisti in Vrsovice, and the two tables opposite which are usually for stamgasti were free – we were offered a spot. In the side room, the pub lounge, there’s a compact and effective layout which emphasises the social function of the pub – it feels close, cosy. All the sort of things you don’t feel when you visit the likes of Cerveny Jelen or Fuze.

Both a pleasant surprise and a firm recommendation. We suggest a visit early evening, between 6-8pm to capture more vibrancy.
