| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ A broad drinks range, albeit perhaps ‘last gen’ but some curios here. Additionally the presence of cask ale from handpump – not guaranteed but as and when stocks last. Competent all-rounder back bar. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Instantly gobsmacking, like walking back to a London pub from the 1970s with its brown hues, corner bar, brewing signage and dart board. Impossible to detect from the otherwise plain glass shop frontage. Behind the bar there are further rooms including a pool room to the back. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Wonderful character with natural ambience even when completely quiet, with the atmosphere only getting better as it fills. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Piano, darts, pool table, board games, TV |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️ Among the more expensive in the city, although not wildly beyond the going rate. |
| Description | One of Finland’s oldest pubs, formed in 1969, when licensing was coming in to combat alcohol abuse problems. The British pub was a format often used and the idea that this would provide a civilised space for social drinking that tempered excess proved to be effective. These days it is among the oldest continually running pub operations in Finland. You’d never spot this from the outside with its unprepossessing glass frontage offering barely any hint of what’s inside. As you enter however, you will be transported into an almost unchanged simulacra of a British pub from the early 1970s, all brown hues, carved wood, brewing signage and mirrors, with darts, pool and a piano. The Anglophilia extends to occasional supply of fresh cask ales and British ales on keg too. But don’t take this as being a themed pub – far from it. The length of time this has been open has endowed it with a particular character of its own, the events it has hosted, the stories it can tell push this far beyond the realm of some tacky theme establishment. The natural ambience whether late afternoon, or in the bustle of a winter evening is extraordinary. If it was located in London itself there is no doubt it could be classed among the very best traditional pubs in the city. As for Finland, it is certainly belongs the rarified air of the upper echelons. The darts and pool particularly give the place an easy casual nature which disarms the sometimes staid nature of Finnish pub going (excluding karaoke bars), the drinks are perhaps last-gen but more than good enough, they will serve you well. It isn’t especially cheap but you will have to suck it up on this occasion to experience one of the finest pubs in Europe. |
