Description:
What would bring you to Bytom? Well, as part of Katowice’s conurbation, there’s a constellation of towns that were engulfed by the industry and urban sprawl that caused settlements of a few thousand people to become a metropolis. Travelling around these towns is like exploring a central European equivalent of Tokyo, if it had peaked in the early 1900s. Transport is good, with regular cheap trains and trams shuffling back and forth from cities like Gliwice, Zabrze, Chorzów and here, Bytom.

It’s not a dramatic city but there are traces of history to enjoy and a large Rynek (market square).

There’s nightlife of a sort based in a couple of streets off the square, and we found Pub na Rycerskiej offered that most typical of Polish pubs, the exposed brick cosiness and pubbyness, although with a few strings to its bow too.

With a changing roster of Czech lagers, this ensures good quality and variety, and they’re reasonably priced too.

The interior environment is appealing with its large ceiling beams, brickwork, niches and booths.

It’s a popular spot and feels like an institution that’s been around a while. That cult status is added to by late opening 6 days a week.

Although they don’t have a kitchen there’s an arrangement with the next door pub which allows you to eat in here!

One to head directly to on an evening in Bytom. (Added October 2025)
