Quality of Drinks:
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Kamenice 10 & 12 on taps with Pilsner Urquell. In the past beers from other smaller brewers have been featured.
Style/Décor:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Compact taproom entered direct from the street with a bar to the left and seating to the right. There’s a small snug to the rear of the room out of sight of the bar. Wood panelled walls, brushed metal bar and blown tiling, dark grey octagonal patterns which can be seen in other pubs from this stable. Modern take on traditional.
Atmosphere/Character:
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Neighbourly and friendly, cosmopolitan without being in-your-face/arrogant, both relevant feeling and respectful of tradition. Casual atmosphere without airs and graces, but a smart place to be too.
Amenities/Events:
❤️❤️
Czech tapas (open-faced sandwiches and canapés), limited outdoor leaning space. Deliberately stripped back to essentials.
Value For Money:
❤️❤️❤️
Fair value for money but no great discounts or bargains either.
Description:
Pivo & Syn belongs to a concept that has spread across Brno between 2018ish and the present, seemingly inspired by the roaring success of cult pub U Blahovky.
These all take the traditional neighbourhood Pivnice concept with its social taproom area and casual nature while rebooting them with good beer, high standards of tapping and presentation, and often clean lines in terms of décor.
Pivo & Syn (Beer & Son) is one we’d known about for a while but finally had opportunity to visit in September 2025. The bars compact nature is the immediate standout which means it has a nice intimacy and social feel even when quieter.
The décor is newbuild but there’s a good balance of dark wood and characterful artwork, it isn’t one of those modern bars with stripped lighting or distressed grey/beigeness.
Their bar area is a real centrepiece and almost feels like the bar’s stage, set slightly up from the room, and regulars/friends tend to sit in the space either side of the bar.
Both cosmopolitan and truly respectful of the tradition of these pubs, there is much to be said for it as a viable way of taking the concept into the future without losing the baby with the bathwater.
The choice of Kamenice beer, from a traditional independent brewery revived from closure in 2017 and brewed to modern standards is an almost perfect accompaniment for a pub of this nature.
