Choice/Quality of Drinks:
❤️❤️❤️
The usual Pilsner + Kozel combination. In the provinces that might deserve a 4 stars but Brno can do better. Nevertheless, beers are well kept and poured. Typical Czech back bar of alternatives.
Style/Décor:
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Traditional, clandestine drinking den of dark wood and forest greens decorated with items gathered over the years. Clean, tidy, well-ventilated rather than shabby.
Atmosphere/Character:
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A cosy escape from the outside, whether that be the summer heat, the icy grip of winter or the troubles of your life. Compact size makes it feel relatively intimate and homely.
Amenities/Events:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Food, snacks, TV, outdoor seating.
Value For Money:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
A little below average pricing and overall good value for what’s on offer.
Description:
One of Brno’s highest rated pubs is neither central, nor high-profile, but that speaks to the loyalty of locals in this neighbourhood. Despite looking distant on a map, reaching here is pretty straightforward with regular trams passing by linking direct to the station and city centre.
The district is semi-suburban with rows of townhouses and low-key independent businesses. There are not a lot of pubs nearby either, giving it an excellent catchment area.
The pub itself is on a side-street lined with mature trees and situated in a low-rise traditional Czech building with patio furniture out front.
Inside, you’ll find a charming, lived-in saloon bar. Traditional styling with dark wood, greens and items gathered over the years. It’s clean, well kept and well-ventilated but not sterile in the slightest.
A TV plays in the corner unobtrusively, groups and couples chat away, and on some evenings there’s live folk music. Forget the typical pub restaurant format, this is a boozer.
Confusingly it’s closed on weekends when you’d think they’d clean up, while on weekdays the 4-10 opening hours are pretty modest, meaning it isn’t somewhere to go for a late night, despite looking all the world like the kind of place that would. Perhaps the proximity to residents had something to do with that, perhaps not.
On tap there’s nothing too exciting to report, however what they do is kept and poured very well and is more than adequate, pricing too just a little below the average.
As a particular kind of pub it is never going to be everyone’s favourite style, but the social focus and enjoyably local, unpretentious atmosphere is key here. Despite being a newcomer there were no eyebrows raised at my arrival, and it felt a friendly place to be.
For these reasons we recommend it highly!
