DescriptionA hotel and restaurant, this is another venue where the definition of ‘pub’ let alone bar is stretched a little. In order to qualify, a Pivnice venue should ideally have an atmosphere akin to a beer hall, where huge plates of food may emerge, but similarly, there is no pressure to eat any of it, and just as welcome being groups of people to enjoy a beer and a chat.

Pegas in Brno is the best old fashioned pivnice in the city, the emphasis on fashioned rather than old. The décor is extremely well done, aping a traditional pivnice in every way I can think of, curved ceiling, wood pannelling, bench seating, plants dangling off the beams, and despite a ground floor level location, a real cellar type feel. This is enhanced further by the gorgeous copper tuns by the kitchen which give evidence of the brewing activity at the hotel. There is a nice range of beer ephemera and artwork spaced out sparsely along the walls, and there is the potential that adding more and making it a little more ramshackle would give it more character and the feel of it being an institution.

Often these efforts can end up being an afterthought and a little corporate/by-the-numbers, but Pegas have concocted a very solid and high quality range of Czech beers. The styles are certainly standard, but the standard itself from lagers through to dark ale is very good. When combined with the friendly beer hall atmosphere it justifies wandering in for a drink alone.

The food offers big portions of hearty winter fuel cooked with fresh ingredients, well seasoned and delicious. This is a draw, however, I would propose they add a designated drinking area as many other Pivnices do, with a tapster and an area for locals to congregate.

Service was professional and courteous, although I did get ushered towards the corner of my table when a big group arrived, that was rather inevitable. There is a lunch crowd and an evening crowd, so if you don’t want to mingle your boozing in with dining try mid-afternoon, early evening or late night.

As hinted at above, Pegas is actually in its infancy, but its moves so far have been the right ones. It would be great to return in 40-50 years to find it imbued with the same sort of character as a true old fashioned Pivnice, but it’s more likely it will be stripped clean and turned into another chrome, bland affair.
