| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ A one room bar dominated by the corner bar itself which occupies most of the space with seating at the bar and around the sides. A warm glow greets you on approach, reds and golds with varnished wood panelling somewhat of a rarity and standout for Croatia. Famous artwork prints on the wall are suitable, if not very inspired. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Treading that fine line between a casual drop in venue to meet friends and catch up with staff and an intimate, special feeling space to enjoy a special drink. That is a big compliment, as so many do not even try to achieve that. Although we prefer proper seating, the stools and high chairs add to that here and encourage conversation and cross-chat. |

| Description | A rare example where we take a trip abroad and visit a venue that has only just opened. This happened in August 2024 where we found Paloma Nera. According to the staff this bar used to be a den of iniquity, and you can kind of see why that would be, positioned next door to a strip club. It is unclear if the wood fittings date to that era but they have endowed Paloma Nera with a very distinctive character. Ordinarily, cocktail bars do not have the feeling that you can walk straight up off the street and sit on the corner with the ease of a tapas bar, but you can do that here. All the while, there is an intimacy due to the small size, rich red hues and lighting that make you forget it throws its doors open to welcome the public. Bespoke cocktails off a purposefully restrained menu are delicious and they will accept alternatives if they have the ingredients in stock to work with. There are alternatives to cocktails and while sitting at the bar it is easy to begin conversing with friendly staff who are of course multilingual. Taking some of the finer points of the best cocktail bars while maintaining the ease of welcome and local character is a skill and one not many achieve (or even try to achieve). It is striking just how different this place is as well as just how needed it was too, and it comes highly recommended. (Added August 2024) |
