Description:
Opened in 2021 adjacent to the Menen gate war memorial – a giant arched gateway, Øl – Tankbier BV has in some ways prime position, albeit next to somewhere destined to be considerably sombre. That provides a slightly disjointed feel, though it doesn’t deter customers who sit on the terrace to spectate on the daily performances of the Last Post.
Inside, you’ll find a restored gabled town house that has been carefully curated into a multi-storey pub. The Tank Bier USP is one they trade on. The options are SAS Pils (desperately worth avoiding at all costs – you can’t polish a turd), Stella (also pointless), Cristal (passable), then the more interesting ones: Wipers Times Blond and Tank Hommelbier – the crowning glory. It barely gets any better on a summer day than drinking a perfectly poured creamy, hoppy Hommelbier direct from the tank.
The downstairs bar is narrow and long with exposed brick and atmospheric muted lighting. Space increases upstairs where exposed rafters give it an airier feel. As well as the Tank Bier there is a handsome keg selection covering most Belgian styles. Price-wise you’re looking at an extra 10-15% for some of these than average, but the quality is at least there.
A tasteful, well-thought through modern pub that at least shows off the premises well and belongs in a modest roster of superior pubs in Ypres.
