| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ The drinks don’t stray from the typical PU/Radegast combination, although they do stock their Volba Sladku (brewer’s choice) monthly variations on tap. Typical central European alternatives/back bar. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ A two room pub, the larger of which is the bar room, with kitchen to the right and bar straight ahead. A personalised room that has eschewed the minimalist approach to create something homely, something that feels like it has been around for a good while. A stalwart, if you like. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Being provincial, the atmosphere is more casual and this pub feels like it has true regulars, the ones that come in every day rather than once or twice a week. Socialising, rather than dining is the focus. Homely during the day and lively on weekend evenings right until closing. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️ Food, snacks, TV, newspapers |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Very reasonable value for what’s on offer given the location. |
| Description | When you visit any Czech town or city for the first time and seek a beer, you’re craving a central pub with a Czech character. Something worn-in, a bit of an institution, a place everyone knows well, site of many trysts and falling outs, maybe with a redoubtable tapster and server combination. Sadly, those can be difficult to come by, even in some larger towns, but Hradec Králové has this covered in the shape of this place. A short lollop from the utterly beautiful central square down a cobbled lane to this pub. The exterior has unfortunately received the generic Pilsner Urquell signage, but things improve immediately on entering. A two room pub, the larger of which is the bar room, with kitchen to the right and bar straight ahead. A personalised room that has eschewed the minimalist approach to create something homely, something that feels like it has been around for a good while. A stalwart, if you like. Being provincial, the atmosphere is more casual and this pub feels like it has true regulars, the ones that come in every day rather than once or twice a week. Socialising, rather than dining is the focus, but they offer a good range of food too. The drinks don’t stray from the typical PU/Radegast combination, although they do stock their Volba Sladku (brewer’s choice) monthly variations on tap, which is a plus. A further plus is how good value it is. This is about as central and institutiony as you’ll find in the city, but the drinks clock in at an entirely fair rate. If you were critical, perhaps the opening hours are a little inflexible (an extra hour on the weekend wouldn’t hurt), but to leave you wanting more at the end of the night is one strategy to ensure your return. With plenty of character, a cast of regulars, a homely interior, good beer and good grub, this is a standout venue in the region and you can hardly skip this place. (Added October 2024) |
