Quality of Drinks
⭐⭐
An old fashioned selection befitting an old fashioned pub. Largely keg/creamflow North East options with 1 cask line of local ales and some cans, including box cider. Simple range of alternatives.
Style/
Décor
⭐⭐⭐⭐
A characterful old battleaxe of an alehouse, facing out direct onto the street, inside there’s a two-room set up with bar and lounge to the rear. The bar is traditional with exposed beams and fireplace though has a TV and a generally informal setup. The lounge to the rear has detailed wallpaper, altogether rather plush, old fashioned and dimly-lit, with a large hatch to access the bar.
Atmosphere/
Character
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Local, friendly and chatty with a predictably male, middle aged demographic during the day, but livened up with some local comings and goings and a charismatic bartender. Later on a slightly broader clientele and the atmosphere in the back room allows the depth and subtleties of the place to shine.
Amenities/
Events
⭐⭐⭐
TV, snacks, jukebox, live events, limited outdoor seating to the rear.
Value For Money⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fair value
DescriptionA well loved, battered, characterful little battlecruiser of a pub set directly off the street. From its stained glass, detailed wallpaper, exposed beams, Sunderland footy memorabilia and loyal clientele you know where you are pretty quickly in here. With a local flavour, live events and intimate evening atmosphere this may not have the range of drinks of others nearby and is almost certainly more of a love/hate place, but it remains nonetheless deservedly popular.
