Tapas bars come in different shapes and sizes – often tiny cafeteria type venues as you’ll find in the likes of Granada, up to eateries like this one.

The emphasis on informality in Spain improves many restaurants though, and Mesón Cumbres Mayores, an institution from 1966 maintains a lively social bar area as well as the improved food options (with prices corresponding).

Over the years it has become a city institution and was one of the handful of venues that felt more international than most, owing to its high profile.

The interior is faux tavern like with terracotta, sepia and blushing pink tones, along with elements like hanging hams, garlic and herbs, amphorae and so on. It’s a more bourgeois option with a crowd to match, making it a better choice in the evening in my opinion.
