| Description | Atlas Obscura writes:”Le Cercueil was unleashed onto the world in 1974 following the release of the horror movie, “The Exorcist.” The decor, featuring grim reapers and dark skeletons, creates a morbid atmosphere in this unique tavern. The only thing creepier than placing your skull-shaped beer mug on a coffin is the nomenclature of the cocktails. Sit back and sip on your choice of corpse juice, devil’s sperm, and vampire blood. The bar offers a speed-dating service but beware, the ultraviolet neon lights give potential lovers an eerie corpse-like appearance.“ Our experience? These days, very much a fixture of the micro-economy that operates in and around the Grand Place. The prices are not cheap, but expertly poised right on the limit of “OK yeah, fine. Go on then”. In fairness there are some good classic Belgian beers for sale here. The interior retains its camp gothika and is worn in almost to the point of worn out. Nevertheless, the sense of fixture and novelty value carry over a certain charm – it wouldn’t be Belgium otherwise, would it? One to visit when you’re in the mood. (Added May 2025) |
