Description:
La Galerie is a socio-cultural association in the Grottes district. It operates from an old building on Rue de l’Industrie. A space hosts monthly art exhibitions. Concerts and public readings are held regularly. Six community meals take place there each month. Currently, around sixty volunteers are involved in the Galerie’s activities.

The association actively participates in the cultural life of the Grottes district. For over fifteen years, it has organized the Fête de la Musique (Music Festival) on the right bank of the Garonne River in conjunction with the City of Geneva.

La Galerie is also responsible for animating the Rue de l’Industrie during the Jour de Fête festival, in partnership with Pré-en-Bulle. This involves organizing two days of concerts, two refreshment stands, various activities, and coordinating with the neighborhood.

But let’s get to the bar – small, ramshackle and inimitable. As you enter, the identity of the place is immediately distinct, from the actions of its patrons, to the body language of the staff, to the unpretentious, homely space and its decorations.

The Grottes area of Geneva is the flipside to the commercial centres swish, businessy elan and wealth. This is where ordinary folk, dreamers, people down on their luck, musicians, creatives and yes, drop-outs go to feel valued and to be part of a world they have been frozen out of elsewhere in the city.

Artists work on their portfolios over a cup of tea, couples passionately disagree over a Kir glass of cheap plonk, musicians intermittently start up, stop, jam and colour the space without intruding on the activities of one another. The volunteers at the bar are often happy to chat and get to know you, with some great stories and origins to be found.

Prices are pointedly fair, reflecting its audience well.

It is vital that cities allow space for a counter culture and Geneva is much the richer for allowing this area to exist.

On any repeat visit to Geneva I would be blazing a trail here on an evening.
