An entire shop of 1000+ wines and spirits to choose from with some alternatives too. The ‘by the glass’ menu is extensive too, offering two dozen styles to pick from.

Shop with a bar built into it. You’ll enter into the shop space with shelves, warmly decorated, with a bar area, semi-partitioned by some shelving to the right of the entrance. Order at the bar then take your receipt to the shop counter to pay. The bar area is simply furnished but interestingly decorated with criminal mugshots and old photographs.

Atmosphere/Character:

Very much a humble locals hangout and a bit of a calm oasis in the city centre. Gossip and regulars reading the news.

Superb value considering what’s on offer.

Description:
Opened in 1969, owner Danilo Pogliani maintains what is a peculiar curio. It’s a shop but also a bodega with an extensive menu of wines by the glass to enjoy on sight. These are enjoyed in a semi-partitioned area to the right of the entrance decorated with photographs of various figures who have passed through the store over the decades, as well as mug shots of local criminals!

Unusually you pay for the wine at the til in the shop as you go (something not apparent when you enter), but staff are helpful and obliging.

They also serve antipasti and small cooked plates which is again, a surprise given the shopfront style entrance.

During the day you’ll find regulars who come in to read papers and gossip, and appear on first name terms with the staff, which adds an element of ease to the environment, even if you may feel like a fish out of water initially.

Central Milan is crying out for more of these old authentic hangouts. It is nice to see such a range of good wine at fair prices to be enjoyed somewhere local and humble.
