* Please note this bar is difficult to find! You have to enter the mall “Spirala” which refers to a central corkscrew spiral path leading to the bottom floor. | Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️ Mainstream beer selection, but at least covering a range of styles. A similar approach to the back bar for mixers, shots, cocktails etc. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Basement bar, darkly lit but with garish green painted walls decorated with musical ephemera. Considerably larger than pictures suggest with a big approach to the bar at the rear and two sizeable rooms either side of it. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ At the hear of the “Spirala” complex, the sense of institution pervades – it has hosted many nights and is a comfortable old pair of shoes that students, youngsters, as well as some post-grads and alternatives hang out at. Large enough that you can turn around to see people dancing, while across the room couples can be in comfortable conversation. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️ Live events, DJ, snacks |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️❤️ Despite being a studenty venue this isn’t as cheap as you might anticipate, but there is nothing above/below the norm. |
| Description | La Bază is a constituent part of Spirala, a semi-abandoned mall whose basement has been converted into a half dozen bars and clubs. Therefore visiting here is to also visit what feels more of a collective space. There is a grimy charm to the basement by the spiral itself – somewhere genuinely alternative feeling rather than some corporate invention. This means mind your head, mind the puddle, mind the drunks and join the crowd. Some venues specialise in certain music genres or lifestyles but La Bază is more of a genuine all-rounder. The interior has clearly seen many nights and has that feel of slipping on a pair of old shoes. It’s a larger place than you may imagine, but it makes sense when you see it getting busy. The space allows for anything like dancing, cards, even quiet conversation in the shadier corners without those impeding on each other. Despite a mainstream audience and mainstream drinks, the atmosphere doesn’t really feel like that, nor does it feel cliquey – it manages to be a reasonable all-rounder that pulls in a corresponding range of people and avoids being bland. No harm in that at all. For the Spirala experience and late night fun, this is your best bet. (Added November 2024) |
