A surprising array of unusual misfit lagers, none of which are particularly cutting edge but certainly different to most. A stock back bar of familiar central European staples with some retro appearances.

Décor
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A beautiful, homely, worn-in little dive, warm lighting and sepia tones to its furnishings. Wood, lace, net, etc.

Character

A delightfully young, vibrant and friendly hangout spot. Informal, without the scuzz element that many Czech dives have as a default, which may explain a healthy gender mixture here.

One of the cheapest places for drinks you’ll find in the city.
Description‘The Crocodile’s Tail’ is a classic example of not judging a book by its cover – or by online reviews. Gloomy lo-res photos of a characterful, but forlorn looking dive could hardly be less representative of this cult classic, a late bar that cut its teeth in the 1990s. Here we were imagining arriving to find the remaining 70-something men marking time in a largely empty pub, but instead found a vibrant, young audience both inside and stood out on the street. A bar that actually has more in common with the likes of the antiquey bars in Kazimierz district in Kraków, minus the tourists. Enter a homely, well-worn in small pub decorated with retro domesticity and a few hints at the pubs name to go with it. Tablecloths and lamp lights add an interesting touch to a usually minimalist format which Czechs don’t often deviate from, adding a distinctive identity, the sort which you could easily become loyal to. There’s an erratic feeling that suggests each visit here may go slightly differently, but service was really friendly, as were the surroundings. To add to its oddball, misfit feel, lesser spotted mid-range lagers on tap including some for a price which is really, really good. Would you order the fried cheese here? Possibly risky, but worth a try.As with most bars of its kind, there are idiosyncrasies – it doesn’t always smell great around the bar area, for example, but in the lounge it’s super atmospheric.Even allowing the surprise and delight to subside, when reflecting on our experience with a rational distance, we’re still sure this is one of the best drinking holes in Czechia.
