| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️ Budvar and Chotebor beer. Typical back bar. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Attractive beer garden out front with gate entrance and mature trees. Hatch for service. The pub interior is traditionally furnished with chunky wooden tables, genteel faded decor and a fish-tank further along. In summer this is barely even an overflow area – it’s almost unused. But in winter you’ll be glad of it. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Lovely atmosphere and local life on summer days on the terrace, which inverts in winter as people huddle inside. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Food, snacks, takeaway, shop, outdoor seating, fireplace, fish tank |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Among the better value/cheaper options in Bratislava. |
| Description | Going for a beer near Bratislava station isn’t replete with options. There’s the amusingly dingy Caffe Pressburg at the station itself which has a certain charm but one which can wear thin at times too. Then there’s Hostinec Rychlik at the bottom of the hill which is an ancient old redoubt – with Corgon (not great). Krcma Funus provides a superior option of the three, with a slight caveat of an uphill climb. You’ll still reach here faster than any places in the city centre though. As you walk up a tree-lined track, Krcma Funus is there waiting for you at the hilltop. A similarly leafy beer garden awaits which only needs even the earliest Spring kiss of warmth to have people sat outside with a beer. There’s table service though you can also order direct from a hatch to the pub. Their beers are Chotebor and Budvar, a pretty unusual combo, each at reasonable prices. The typical cheap pub grub fodder to help wash those down can be enjoyed on the terrace, or inside. The pub interior is traditionally furnished with chunky wooden tables, genteel faded decor and a fish-tank further along. In summer this is barely even an overflow area – it’s almost unused. But in winter you’ll be glad of it. Tourists and foreigners are not unknown but this is essentially a locals pub in a neighbourhood not even 0.1% of visitors ever explore. A lot of Bratislava’s nicest areas west of the main road into town are passed over, giving people an unfairly lopsided impression of a city which is not without its niceties. Krcma Funus has a similar cult reputation to the likes of Bernard pri Lyceu and has played host to lots of evenings that stay in the city’s consciousness. So, if you’re up for that 15 minute climb, you can write your own page into that history. (Added July 2025) |
