Description:
I have to confess feeling a modicum of embarrassment that it took 3 visits to Poznan before discovering this bar. A concept developed in 2002 in order to support the activities of an adjoining theatre. Przyjaciół, or ‘Friends’ refers to the collaboration that supported its establishing.

You enter from the street through a small lobby into a exposed courtyard with a small garden at its centre, on which are patio tables and signs for the café. Head left to an interior and you will be greeted with a dark, cosy, heavily decorated space.

Each room has an ensemble of antique furnishings and plush upholstery. Rich reds and boudoir style lighting, all decorated with photographs from their theatrical performances.

Be sure to check further inside as there are two rooms with partitioned niches.

Their website explains how some of the café and its atmosphere took a life of its own:

“There has not yet been an architect or decorator born in the world who, while building a café,
could say in advance: In this place there will be such and such an audience and such and such a mood. That’s how we thought it and that’s how it has to be… – The café is decorated, furnished, the first guests enter it, and, after some time it turns out that its atmosphere has nothing to do with what its creators intended: put into public use, it begins its own and unpredictable life; its fate cannot be determined in advance.”

Pretence aside, it certainly qualifies as one of Poznan and Poland’s most atmospheric bars.

Befitting their café format, you’ll find a wide range of drinks here covering bases from morning coffee to late night shots, food ranges from cakes to toasties which are adequate and affordable if you need a quick snack.
