DescriptionOnce you subtract the traditional beer halls and craft beer bars it’s interesting to wonder where the alternative spaces are in Nuremberg. I was put onto this place by a guy from Maine called Luke who was running the craft ale bar Mr Kennedy’s at the time – now defunct.

Kater Murr is a backstreet kind of place that you’d never know about if you didn’t live here, as there’s not enough of a presence when doing research online for it to ever stand out. I slowly arced left around an unlit backstreet wondering where the hell it was taking me, until Kater Murr’s doorway appeared.

The venue is relatively bright for an evening visit, as it doubles as a quiet studenty café and reading spot by day. When you walk in there is a large rectangular space with light wooden seating lining the walls and large windows with books and games stacked on the ledges. It’s busy but not so bad that you can’t find a table or a bar stool, and large enough that no-one will stare at you for walking in alone, or even in a group.

The drinks selection is pretty good for a so-called café (it’s a bar) with typical Franconian beers and some more unusual bottles including craft ale representation.

You can’t bottle the sort of vitality imbued in a place when it’s clearly at the peak of its lifespan, which Kater Murr clearly is. Often a place can start to look a little tired and passé once its glory years have passed but Kater Murr doesn’t have to worry about that. There are plenty of amenities, food, games, books, live music and community events which all count in its favour and maintain its reason for being.

I really liked the space and the atmosphere and couldn’t really suggest too many improvements, other than perhaps a few more personal touches on the walls, and a more pubby feeling bar area. Find some time to squeeze in Kater Murr during your visit to Nuremberg.
