| Description | Every now and then a bar comes along in a relatively obscure provincial town that more than punches above its weight. Kaleidoszkóp Ház is such a bar, and there is the nagging thought that if it opened in Budapest then within 5-6 years it may become too saturated with tourists. No such risk here! We nearly didn’t make it in time! Arriving from a severely delayed train from Bratislava to Štúrovo on the Slovakian border, we had barely enough time to cross the bridge over the Danube, check-in, then head straight back out to the bar before its closing. We arrived mid-performance with a small crowd enjoying a fusion band covering everything from oboe, Tibetan singing bowls to Irish rap. It is a friendly place, the kind that goes beyond the norm to help you feel at ease. A younger crowd, though not exclusively, and a warren of rooms that takes in not only the cave but a covered courtyard with atrium and low key pub rooms. The drinks offer is fairly basic but does the trick – that’s not really why you’re here. The special aspects are its unique layout and roster of cultural events performed in such a distinctive space. An essential visit while in town. You can even stay there – they have a hostel with rooms. (Added October 2025) |
