Venue Type:  Czech Hospoda / Compact / Beer Specialists

Year of Inscription: 2025

EBG Rating: 7.7/10

Choice/Quality of Drinks:
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A purveyor of specialist beers which are offered on a rotational basis with the exception of their own home-brewed house lager (which is brewed by them, not just a label). Usually 6-8 choices. Typical Czech back bar of alternatives.

Style/Décor:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Surrounded by colourful panelaky in Ostrava-Jih, this looks more like a farmhouse or some stabling that somehow missed the wrecking ball and diggers while this suburb was being constructed. Inside there’s a typical saloon type bar, very traditional with wooden struts. Not a large place, you’ll find the bar at the entrance and a handful of chunky wooden tables. There’s a front yard which at least doubles its capacity.

Atmosphere/Character:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Highly localised and suburban, but not by any means an old man’s hangout. It is hardly likely to attract groups of women dressed up for a night on the town, but you’ll find a mixed neighbourly audience, largely casual.

Amenities/Events:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Food, snacks, outdoor seating, games, shop

Value For Money:
❤️❤️❤️
Given the location you may expect lower prices but for Ostrava these are definitely in line with any other craft beer bars.

Description:
Determined to be example #1 underneath the phrase “Diamond in the rough”.

Visiting Ostrava-Jih and then walking to U Oráče (At the Ploughman) is a very deliberate act. Thankfully modern technology allows people to identify a proverbial needle in a haystack, the haystacks here being the districts rows of panelaky/tower blocks. Wander in a generally diagonal directions through their parks, playgrounds, side-alleys until you find this little building which appears to have escaped the diggers attention when they built the entire Ostrava-Jih from the group up.

Two buses then a 10 minute walk from the centre, we’re not going to pretend it’s super easy to get here, but overall it doesn’t take a phenomenal amount of time either. There are backups like the Thirsty Camel brewery in case of unexpected closure too.

Why make all this effort? The most convincing reason is its specialist beer selection – 6-8 taps of craft beer you simply won’t find often in Ostrava, particularly in the city centre which only has a few bars attempting that.

There’s also a neighbourly rather than urban feel to it which is more casual, and more knockabout in some respects.

As well as showcasing great beer, they brew it, with their small operation appearing at occasional trade shows and festivals, and producing their regular house lager themselves rather than paying another brewery to do it.

The pub inside is very traditional, an old saloon really with chunky, worn-in furniture and interior, with a pleasant front yard.

If you enjoy specialist beer, traditional pubs, highly casual environments and a sample of local life well off the tourist trail and urban centre, this could be well worth your while.
